Frequently asked questions
Short, direct answers about what eReader does, what it costs and how it treats your data.
What is eReader?
eReader is a book reading app for iPhone, iPad and Mac. It opens your own EPUB and PDF files, lets you change fonts, themes and spacing, reads books aloud with text-to-speech, and keeps your highlights, bookmarks and reading statistics. It is made by an independent developer, Sina Alparslan.
Which file formats can eReader open?
EPUB (versions 2 and 3) and PDF. It does not open MOBI, AZW or KFX files, and it cannot open books protected by DRM, such as most books bought from Kindle, Apple Books or Kobo.
Is eReader free?
Yes. Downloading the app and reading EPUB and PDF books is free, and the free version shows ads between reading sessions. An optional Premium subscription removes ads and unlocks unlimited highlights and bookmarks, all templates and themes, text-to-speech, iCloud sync and AI summaries.
How do I add EPUB or PDF files to eReader on iPhone?
Open eReader and tap the + button, then pick one or more files from the Files app, iCloud Drive, or another storage provider. You can also tap a book in Safari, Mail, Messages or AirDrop and choose Share, then Open in eReader.
Can eReader read books aloud?
Yes. Tap the speaker icon while reading, or select text and choose Read from here. eReader uses the text-to-speech voices on your device, so it works offline. You can change the voice, language and speed, and listening continues with the screen locked. More natural-sounding voices can be downloaded in Settings › Accessibility › Spoken Content › Voices.
Does eReader play audiobook files such as MP3 or M4B?
No. eReader creates the audio from the text of your EPUB or PDF using text-to-speech. It does not play recorded audiobook files.
Does eReader work offline?
Yes. Reading, listening, highlighting, bookmarking and searching all work without an internet connection. A connection is only used for iCloud sync, purchases and ads.
Does eReader sync between iPhone, iPad and Mac?
With Premium, yes. Book files, your reading position, highlights, bookmarks and reading setup sync through your own iCloud account. You need to be signed in to iCloud on each device.
Can I change the font and text size in a PDF?
Yes. eReader extracts the text of a PDF and shows it in the same reflowable view as an EPUB, so fonts, sizes, themes and spacing all apply. PDFs that are scans without a text layer cannot be reflowed; use Page View for those.
What are Bold Word Starts, Paragraph Focus and Color Flow?
They are optional reading aids. Bold Word Starts bolds the first letters of each word to guide your eye. Paragraph Focus dims every paragraph except the one you are reading. Color Flow fades each line from one colour to another so that the end of a line matches the start of the next, making it harder to lose your place. Some readers find these make reading easier; they are not a medical or accessibility treatment.
Does eReader have a dark mode for reading at night?
Yes. There is a Dark theme, a softer blue-grey Dusk theme, a warm Amber-on-black theme for reading in bed and a true-black Night theme, as well as light options such as Sepia, Paper and Sage.
How do the AI summaries work, and which devices support them?
Summaries are generated on your device by Apple Intelligence. The text of your book is not sent to us or to any server. The feature needs a device that supports Apple Intelligence, such as iPhone 15 Pro or later, an iPad or Mac with an M1 chip or later, or iPad mini with A17 Pro, with Apple Intelligence turned on. AI summaries can contain mistakes and are not a substitute for reading the text.
Is my reading private? Can you see my books?
No, we cannot see your books. There is no account, and your files, highlights and notes are stored on your device and, if you turn on sync, in your own iCloud. If you allow it, the app sends anonymous usage statistics and crash reports to help fix problems (in Europe it asks first, and you can switch this off in Settings anywhere), and the free version shows ads from Google AdMob. Book titles, file names and the text you search for are never collected. The Privacy Policy explains this in detail.
How do I remove ads?
Subscribe to Premium in the app. You can also watch one optional video ad to switch ads off for an hour.
How do I cancel Premium or get a refund?
Subscriptions are managed by Apple. Open the Settings app, tap your name, then Subscriptions, and choose eReader to cancel. Refunds are handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Which devices and system versions does eReader need?
iPhone or iPad running iOS 26 or iPadOS 26 or later, or a Mac with Apple silicon.
What happens to my highlights if I delete a book?
Deleting a book from the library also deletes its reading position, highlights, bookmarks and notes, on the device and in iCloud.
Where can I find free EPUB books to read?
Public-domain classics are available as free EPUB files from Project Gutenberg and Standard Ebooks. Many public libraries also lend DRM-free EPUBs. Download the file and open it in eReader.
Which languages is eReader available in?
The app's interface is translated into more than 90 languages, and it can read aloud in every language your device has a voice for. This website has pages in 39 languages.
How do I get help or report a problem?
Use the form on the Support page of this site. Include your device model and system version, and a description of what happened.
